Puppy training: Let’s get this friendship started off on the right paw…
Y'know, I could play with you all day long! But, as much as I love to run, jump and play catch, I also need a few rules. After all, you want me to be a really good dog (and a happy dog!) – and housetraining is the key! It's not hard – but there is some important stuff to know before we start. So here are a few dog training tips from the experts:
- I’m ready to start learning the rules! But remember, we’re just starting out, so be patient.
- Give me someplace special just for me – a place that I can always get to, where my food and bed can be kept separate from my potty area. Remember: no electrical cords here!
- Keep plenty of Purina Pet Gear Ultra Dry Training Pads with DryStep™ on hand for potty training.
- Always have a clean Pet Gear Training Pad on the floor. Set me there a few times and let me smell it to get things started.
- Always be aware of what I’m doing no matter where I am. And take me to the training pad at the first sign that I need to relieve myself.
- If I do have an accident, just take me back to the training pad quickly and don't hit – I don’t like it and it just doesn’t work.
- Once I get the hang of things, we'll both get a little more freedom and time for fun!
- Keep the “bad” stuff out of reach – stuff that might be poisonous or toxic, like medicines and cleaning supplies.
- When you give commands, follow through, and be firm, but gentle – make sure everyone in the house does the same thing. I learn faster when you’re consistent.
- When I do things right, make sure to offer a little praise and reward for reinforcement. It goes a long way!
